As of April 1, the following new rules will apply to the US West card: "For Purchases: Over the award period, you earn a Cash Back Rebate of .5% on net annual purchases of $2,000.00 or less, 1% on net annual purchases of $2,000.01 - $5,000.00, 1.5% on net annual purchases of $5,000.01 - $8,000.00 and 2% on net annual purchases of $8,000.01 or more..." "Cash Back Rebates are subject to a maximum of $1,000.00 in net purchases per month and $10,000.00 in net purchases per year. Each month the net purchases from that month (up to $1,000.00) are added to the total net purchases eleigible in previous months to determine the rebate tier percentage that will be applied. US WEST credit card checks and cash advances do not qualify for Cash Back Rebates." The US West card now tops out at $125 per year if you don't exceed the $1000 per month. I wonder if the current Web pages they have up constitutes false advertising?

The US West Gold Mastercard had a better deal than Discover Private Issue!! A couple of important notes: 1) the US West card runs on a calendar year rebate cycle - which means that unless you intend to spend a whole lot of money between now and the end of the year, you would be better served to continue with your current cards.
Two words of caution for you about the US West Card. First, they have very strict policies regarding how they issue credit and credit lines. The absolute maximum credit limit you can get in the first six months is $10K. In reality, most people will have trouble getting much more than $5K or so. If you need a large limit, just be aware of this. Second, US West seems to be getting very picky about where it will or will not issue their card. I've had a number of reports from people in Texas say that they've been rejected because they are outside the US West service area. I've also heard similar reports from Wisconsin and Puerto Rico. I know people have gotten cards in at least California, Georgia, and Connecticut. Please keep me posted if you can add to this list!
